We’ve all been there: if you can’t do it perfectly, why do it at all? It’s a mindset that sneaks into so many areas of life, especially fitness. And lately, I’ve seen so many incredible people get stuck in that all-or-nothing trap.
As a coach and gym owner, I want to gently flip that script. Here’s the truth: two sessions a week are better than zero, and one session is better than none. Every bit of effort counts, and it all adds up over time.
Why the All-or-Nothing Mindset Doesn’t Work in Fitness
One of the biggest patterns I’m seeing lately, from new leads, returning members, and even longtime clients, is this pressure to be “all in” or not in at all. People tell me things like:
- “If I can’t get here three times a week, I don’t want to waste my membership.”
- “I keep having cancellations or schedule changes, so I feel like I’m failing.”
- “Life is crazy right now… it’s not worth it if I can’t be consistent.”
Life isn’t always consistent.
Work changes. Kids get sick. Parents need help. Someone throws off your whole day. You blink, two weeks go by, and suddenly you feel like you’ve “fallen off.”
And then the thought creeps in:
“Why am I even paying for this?”
But here’s what no one tells you:
The all-or-nothing mentality is the thing keeping you stuck.
Not your schedule.
Not motivation.
Not ability.
Just the pressure to show up perfectly… or not show up at all.
Small Efforts Still Change Everything
If you only make it to the gym once this week, guess what?
That’s one more workout than if you quit.
That’s strength gained, not strength lost.
That’s momentum.
If you make it twice a week, you’re building:
- consistency
- habit
- confidence
- resilience
People underestimate the power of simply showing up when they can.
You don’t build habits from perfection.
You build them from repetition, at any level.
Repetition doesn’t require a perfect time or perfect life.
It just requires you.
“I don’t want to waste money if I can’t make it three times a week.”
I hear this so often.
But here’s the truth:
You do not need four or five workouts a week to make progress.
Members who show up twice a week consistently for a year make more progress than someone who goes hard for three weeks and then disappears for three months.
Progress isn’t built on intensity.
It’s built on consistency, even small consistency.
Your membership isn’t about perfection.
It’s about having a plan, a community, and a place ready for you every single time you walk through the door, even if that’s once a week during a chaotic season of life.
Life Will Always Have Busy Seasons, Your Fitness Has to Fit Within That
There is never going to be a perfect stretch of calm, open time.
Not when you’re raising kids.
Not when you’re caring for parents.
Not when work is wild.
Not around holidays.
Not in the summer.
Not… ever.
If you wait for life to be easy, you’ll wait forever.
And if you quit every time life gets messy, you’ll stay in the same cycle.
Fitness isn’t supposed to control your life.
It’s supposed to support your life.
Good, Better, Best: A Better Way to See Progress
Instead of all-or-nothing, here’s what we teach:
GOOD:
1–2 workouts a week
Basic daily movement
Showing up when you can
BETTER:
2–3 workouts a week
Simple, consistent nutrition habits
Working around life
BEST:
3–4 workouts a week
Dialed-in routine
Long-term goals + structure
And the most important part?
GOOD still moves you forward.
GOOD still builds strength.
GOOD still matters.
You don’t have to live at “best” all year to make progress.
You just need to stay in motion.
You Are Not Failing, You Are Human
If your schedule is chaotic, you’re not failing.
If you miss a week, you’re not failing.
If you don’t hit three workouts, you’re not failing.
You are navigating real life.
Real life does not follow perfect fitness rules.
But you can build the habit of showing up anyway.
Show up tired.
Show up busy.
Show up stressed.
Show up however you are, just show up.
One workout may not change your body immediately.
But it will change your direction.
